Blog Post #4 (3 Picture Books)

The books I chose for this blog are:

  • The Bad Seed by Jory John and Pete Oswald
  • The Good Egg by Jory John and Pete Oswald
  • What do You do with an Idea? by Kobi Yamada and Mae Besom

The Bad Seed
is a cute picture book about a seed who started out not so bad, but went through something hard that made him sad and hurt which made him become a bad seed. In the end, the bad seed decides he doesn't want to be bad anymore. He's not perfect at it, but he's trying and other seeds notice. Such a cute book that a think a lot of kids can connect with. Kids go through hard things which can cause their behavior to change so much that they forget what it was like to be "good." This could encourage kids that they can be happy again if they just try just like the bad seed. This book is definitely a picture story book because the story is told using both the text and illustrations equally with each giving the story exactly what it needs to be told well.

The Good Egg is from the same author and illustrator of The Bad Seed and it's about an egg who is good, and always been good. He helps everyone and is always trying to make the other eggs in his carton behave, but one day he started cracking and the doctor said it's from all the pressure he's put on himself to be the good egg. So, the good egg takes some time for himself until his cracks heal again then he comes back home to his egg carton with a different mindset. He understands that no one is or has to be perfect, that his friends don't have to do each and everything right, and neither does he. This book is so great because there are a lot of perfectionist/people pleasers that could connect to this book (me being one of them). Kids, and adults, can be reminded that there is a balance with it all. That they can't help others if they're feeling cracked themselves. This book is also a picture story book just like The Bad Seed.

The last book I chose is What do You do with an Idea? This is one I stumbled upon at Half Price Books, but absolutely fell in love with it. It is also a picture storybook because the text and illustration flow right along with one another to create such a beautiful story. This story is about a boy who has an idea, but he doesn't know what to do with it. At first, he tries to leave the idea but it follows him and eventually he comes to love his idea. He shares it with some people, but many of them were discouraging, and he almost listened to them. But, he came to love his idea more and more and gave a lot of attention to it until one day it changed and become part of everything around him, and that's when he realized what you do with an idea... You change the world. Just such a great and encouraging book for students! I will definitely be reading this in my future classroom!
