Blog #3 (Slice of Life)

 A little slice of my life I'd like to share would actually be an experience I had today! I had a volunteer interview today at Prestige Learning Institute (PLI) and it was a great experience. PLI is an organization that works with immigrant and refugee families by providing ESL courses for parents and providing childcare and an after school program for children. I really wasn't sure what to expect when I pulled into the parking lot of PLI. I walked in the door and the first thing that caught my eye was a beautiful metal map on the wall and then "Welcome" written around the room in more than twenty languages! Then, I was greeted by Kelsie who showed me around their facility. I saw their classrooms, meeting areas, and offices. It was great to see behind the scenes of how their ESL programming is ran. However, the highlight of the tour was the childcare area! They said they only recently added the new childcare area, but it was painted in bright colors and was the perfect space for little ones to be able to wander around and play. There was a little boy who was about 3 named Hamad who pushed his car toward me and I softly pushed it back. His face lit up with the most precious smile. It was just a little slice of my life, only an hour of my day, but I'm so excited to be able to start volunteering at PLI starting on Thursday!

  Books. To lose track of time from getting lost in the pages and becoming part of the story is just a feeling like no other. I absolutely loved reading in elementary school. I was a good reader and was grateful that reading clicked for me in early elementary. The school that I went to was all about the Accelerated Reader (AR) program, and my little, competitive self was all over earning those AR points. I remember there was a big chart posted in the hallway and every kid had a little bus with his or her name on it that would be moved up according to the amount of points he or she had, and I took pride having my bus in one of the top 2 spots. Among the Hidden

I read Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. Along with Haddix being a  New York Times  bestselling author, this book also received the California Young Readers medal along with many other recognitions and awards. This book's main character is a boy named Luke who lives with his mom, dad, and two older brothers, Matthew and Mark. However, the government has made a law that each family is only allowed two children. So, Luke lives every moment of his life in hiding. Luke is a shadow child. Luke's family live on a farm in the middle of the woods, so if Luke was cautious he was allowed to be outside and help in the barn. However, when Luke was twelve the government came in and cleared out the woods for new houses. Luke wasn't allowed to look out the window, let alone go outside. Luke stays in the attic, and discovers a vent that he can look out to observe the neighbors. Luke catches a glimpse of a third child in the window of the neighbor's house, so he decides to g

When Everybody Wore a Hat

I read When Everybody Wore a Hat  written and illustrated by William Steig. This book received the New York Times Best Illustrated Books Award and the Parents Choice Silver Honor Award. This book was about the details William Steig remembered from 1916 when he was eight years old. There isn't any sort of order or storyline in this book; just a lot of memories or facts from Steig's childhood. I do like this book because it portrays a great picture of the early 1900s from a child's perspective and how different it was then compared to now. However, I really didn't like the illustrations in this book. I think the appropriate grade level for this book would second grade to sixth grade. I don't think I would use this book in my future classroom. A possible activity to be used along with this book is to give students a template to write their own autobiography.
