A little about me!

Hey! I'm so excited to start my future collection of books which will make a big impact on the dynamic of my future classroom library. I hope to be a kindergarten teacher once I obtain my EC-6 Education degree with a supplement in ESL.

The War That Saved My Life

I read the book The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley. This book is a Newberry Honor Book. I didn't realize how much I was going to love this book until I started it. Honestly, I was kind of dreading having to read it since it was historical fiction. They say never judge a book by it's cover, but I definitely learned to never just a book only by it's genre. The book's main character is Ada who has a little brother named Jamie. Ada was born with a disability labeled as a club foot, and her mother only sees her as disabled. Ada's mother doesn't allow Ada to go outside, and treats Ada horribly. Things have always been awful for Ada, but she hadn't even realized how awful it was for her until she got out of the abuse. The title fits the book perfectly because if it wasn't for the war Ada wouldn't have had anywhere to run away to. Blog Post #5 (Two Types of Folklore)

  The two Folklore books that I chose to read were Cinderella and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The Cinderella book that I read was illustrated by Ed Bryan. I really love this version of Cinderella because it's the same beautiful story, but modernized a little more with Ed Bryan's Illustrations. For example, at the end when it says Cinderella and the Prince lived happily ever after the illustration is of them playing ping-pong in the palace. I just think kids would really enjoy these updated illustrations to go along with story they've heard time and time again. Cinderella falls under the type of Folklore known as Fairy Tales. The Three Billy Goats Gruff book that I read was a version retold and illustrated by Janet Stevens. The Three Billy Goats Gruff is a story that falls under the type of Folklore known as Folktales. Blog Post #7 (Poetry)

  The poetry anthology I chose is My Dog May be a Genius by Jack Prezutsky. This is a collection of funny poems that kids would get a absolute kick out of. Most of them involve people or animals doing funny things. One of my favorite ones that I read is "I Know You Won't Believe Me" which is from the perspective of a student to a teacher and what happened to his homework. Here's an excerpt of the poem,  "I rummaged through the closets, the kitchen, and the den, expecting that my homework would soon be seen again. But when I saw the ashes,  you should have heard me shriek- my dragon burned my homework, just like he did last week."(Prezutsky, 2008, pg 13). Jack Prezutsky's collection of poems in My Dog May be a Genius are so funny and lighthearted. The thing that makes this collection of poems stand out to me is how each one has a rhyme scheme or a rhythmic pattern.
